The few days before Christmas is the busiest time of year for retailers as shoppers clamber for last minute gifts and stock up on food and drink for the festive period.
Brand View has taken a look at price inflation for the traditional Christmas dinner (Turkey, Trimmings, Vegetables and Christmas Pudding) since last Christmas.
The average price of Christmas dinner food items has been indexed to 100 to compare price inflation across the UK’s top five supermarkets.
All the retailers, apart from Tesco, have price inflation between 4.4 per cent and 5.0 per cent. This is much greater that the 2.1 per cent annual rate of inflation in Brand View’s monthly Grocer Price Index.
Tesco’s annual inflation rate for the traditional Christmas dinner is over 10 per cent. The greatest amount of price inflation in Tesco has been on the price of Turkeys, which have risen by an average of 23.2 per cent on like-for-like products.
